First Hand Review of the 2011 Costume Designers Guild Awards
Attending the 2011 Costume Designers Guild Awards has become an annual tradition for me as a costuming for film assistant for over six years. Here is a summary of the events, designers, and surprises of the 2011 Costume Designers Guild Awards from Beverly Hills, California.
I arrived in Beverly Hills on the 22nd of February early in the morning to discuss the expected award winners with event director of the previous year Martin George. We spoke about the history of the awards ceremony which has been steadily gaining in popularity every year. George suggested that the importance of the costumes being designed has become crucial to the credibility of the films involved because of the advent in high definition technology. Movies of old might have been able to get away with clothing defects. This is no longer the case with pixel and screen sizes increasing through new technology.
I also interviewed designer Randall Christensen about his flamboyant style. He said that crystals were the new trend that makes everything sparkle. Plenty of attendees showed how much light could be reflected from this popular happening in fashion design. Even Halle Berry was sporting some beautiful jewelry to accent her outfit.
One of the surprise nominees was Janie Bryant for her costume design for the television show, “Mad Men”. I spoke with a production assistant on one of the losing nominees of this category who believed that the win was deserved and the work was of the utmost professionalism. The detailed contrasting fabrics that outfitted the characters on screen really created a back drop for the film to support the mood and genre.
Another big winner Tuesday night was “Alice in Wonderland” The supportive nature of the attire of the movie was a clear favorite for the award. The stunning visuals given by the outfits were beautiful and well featured in the awards reel on screen. A post awards interview quoted the winner as giving credit to the entire team that provided wardrobes and make up for helping the crew achieve the win.
The entire evening at the Beverly Hills Hilton was fantastic. The atmosphere in Beverly Hills was vibrant and energetic. Streamers and chandeliers shimmered in the bright lights and photographers flash bulbs. Many stars were on hand including lead designers from dozens of famous brands. This elegant event showcased some of the finest attire both on the stage and in the audience which makes this a great event every year.
